This historical novel, Encounter (Mannam), by Hahn Moo-Sook, one of Asia's most honored writers, is a story of the resilience in the Korean spirit. It is told through the experiences of Tasan, a high-ranking official and foremost Neo-Confucian scholar at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Because of Tasan's fascination with Western learning, then synonymous with Catholicism, he is exiled to a remote province for 18 years. In banishment he meets! people from various social and religious backgrounds--Buddhist monks, peasants, shamans--whom he would not otherwise have met. The events of Tasan's life are effectively used to depict the confluence of Buddhist, Neo-Confucian, Taoist, and shamanistic beliefs in traditional Korea.
A subplot involves three young sisters, the daughters of a prominent Catholic aristocrat, and affords the reader vivid glimpses into Yi-dynasty women's lives, particularly those of palace ladies, scholars' wives, tavern keepers, shamans, and slaves. In contrast to the long-held Confucian stereotype of female subservience, this story illustrates the richness of women's contribution to Korean culture and tradition.
Encounter's detailed narrative provides a broad and informed view of nineteenth-century Korea, making it a highly useful book for courses on Korean literature and society. From the author: The esterification of the hydroxyl group of starch with DuPont Surlyn was considered as pretreatment method of starch before blending with polyolefins. In treating starch with Surlyn, two different reaction conditions were taken to optimize reaction conditions. First, the esterification reaction was carried out in 110 [degrees] C xylene with oleic acid as a catalyst. Second, the reaction was carried out in a 90 [degrees] C mixture of deionized water and xylene with ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) as an initiator. Starch granules would be swollen above the gelatinization temperature in water. In both cases, starch was modified by Surlyn to have good compatibility with low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The mechanical and rheological properties were examined for blends of the treated starch and LDPE. This system may be one of the biodegradable polymer blends that sufficiently retain properties as a pa! ckaging film.

I Am Love

  • I AM LOVE (DVD MOVIE)
I AM LOVE tells the story of the wealthy Recchi family, whose lives are undergoing sweeping changes. Eduardo Sr., the family patriarch, has decided to name a successor to the reins of his massive industrial company, and in so doing, surprises everyone by splitting power between his son Tancredi and grandson Edo. However, Edo dreams of opening a restaurant with his friend Antonio, a talented chef. At the heart of Tancredi's family is his wife, Emma (Tilda Swinton), a Russian immigrant who has adopted the culture of Milan. An adoring and attentive mother, Emma's existence is shocked to the core when she falls deeply in love with Antonio and pursues a passionate love affair that will change his family forever. This movie is like eating bonbons in a hothouse. For some films, walking the fine line between sublime and silly becomes an entertainment in itself, and such is the ca! se with I Am Love, Luca Guadagnino's lush drama set within an Italian business dynasty in Milan. We see much of the film from the perspective of an outsider who has nevertheless fitted herself into this aristocratic world for many years: Emma, the Russian-born wife of the textile company's new CEO. She's played by Tilda Swinton, whose customarily penetrating work is enhanced by her speaking Russian and Italian (how does she do it?). The Russian heritage might be a tip-off--Emma could have a touch of Anna Karenina about her--because she embarks on a grand affair with a much younger man. The many levels of melodrama play out against gorgeous exteriors and wildly overdressed interiors, as though Guadagnino looked back through Italian film heritage and decided it was time for someone to out-do the opulent visions of Luchino Visconti. Adding to the strong flavor of high aestheticism is the soundtrack, which uses various excerpts of pieces by the great contemporary compose! r John Adams, to evocative effect (the opening shots of snowed! -over Mi lan buildings are spellbinding). But let's not forget about the silly: one can concede the movie's usefulness as eye candy while noting that there is something fundamentally pretentious and overheated about it all, a designer's vision of storytelling. I Am Love overshoots the sublime by a wide margin, but it's fun to consume. --Robert Horton

Tell No One

  • TELL NO ONE (DVD MOVIE)
Juliette Fontaine (Kristin Scott Thomas, Golden Globe® Nominee for I've Loved You So Long, Oscar® nominee for The English Patient) is a frail, haunted woman, an ex-doctor who's a shell of her former self. Having served 15 years in prison for an unspeakable crime, she's back on the "outside." With nowhere else to go, she comes to live with her loving but estranged sister Lea (Elsa Zylberstein). Together the sisters embark on a painful but redemptive journey back from life's darkest edge in this gripping drama of struggle and salvation.Kristin Scott Thomas is brilliant as Juliette, freed from prison after serving 15 years. Enigmatic, reserved, yet ready to re-enter life cautiously, Juliette moves in with her younger sister, Lea (Elsa Zylberstein), a literature professor, and the latter's husband Luc (Serge Hazanavicius), who worries about allowing Jul! iette into a home with two young children (related to the reason she was convicted in the first place). Also in the house is Juliette and Lea's father (Jean-Claude Arnaud), mute from illness. Writer-director Philippe Claudel slowly reveals details about the nature of Juliette's crime as she takes a job in a hospital records department and is wooed by a colleague. Other forces in Juliette's life--people asking questions, a visit to her dementia-suffering mother, tensions between her and Lea--slowly tease out the mystery behind her actions and takes viewers to a conclusion that adds an element of surprise but ties things up too tidily. Claudel cultivates an aura of naturalism and no-frills storytelling that allows dramatic developments and revelations to unfold easily. The film borders a bit on soap opera, but the grace and intelligence of Thomas' performance, offset by Zylberstein's more emotional work, is never less than compelling. --Tom Keogh

As the anniversary of her death approaches, Alex begins to receive cryptic emails and a video that seems to suggest that she is alive. But when he makes a mad dash from the police who visit him at his office, he seems to have signed his own confession. This synopsis doesn't even begin to hint at the genuinely exciting and surprising twists, turns, and revelations that await Alex in this Chinese box of a mystery. Brilliantly acted by an ensemble that includes Kristin Scott Thomas and French movie icon Jean Rochefort (Pardon Mon Aff! aire), Tell No One invites repeat viewings, the better to appreciate the intricacies of its plotting and construction. I wrote this! book because, sadly, I see the United States turning more and more towards communism. As misinformed Americans embrace eagerly the total socialist society concept, the nanny state, I hear the “echo” of my hard communist life in Romania and the cries for freedom.
All the stories of becoming an American citizen, the pride, the pain, the hard work, experiencing good and bad along the way while weaving myself into the fabric of society, being an American longer than I was a Romanian, where I came from, why, and how, had to be told.
The vignettes are a small glimpse into the universe of a child and a young woman growing up under communism and the pained, tumultuous transition of a young adult to life in a free, capitalist American society.
The painful adaptation to a foreign culture, the rejection by my new family, the abandonment with two small children in a foreign land, the clash of cultures stemming from either ignorance, language barriers, or fear of th! e unknown were daunting.
Understanding that being differ! ent is j ust that, different, and making others embrace the concept was interesting and frustrating. Not belonging to an entrenched culture and its traditions and dealing with rejection posed many dilemmas.
It was important to explain in simple prose, matter of fact, what communism was like. Living under communism was not the romanticized version promoted by Hollywood on celluloid or on chic merchandise; it was not wearing the “cool” Che Guevara t-shirt of the murderer and butcher of thousands and thousands of innocents. Celebrities use their platforms and microphones to promote communism and bash the capitalist society that allowed them to become famous and rich in the first place. They have no clue what it is like to live every day under communism.
Communism was re-education camps; it was poverty, misery, unfairness, proletariat and the ruling elite, death by medical neglect of the socialized medical system, shortages of everything, especially food and medicine, poor! housing, no freedom of speech, religion, travel, assembly, or movement. Communism was the death of the human spirit. Communism was the premature death of my father and many others like him who happened to be in the crosshairs of communist elite interests of totalitarian control.

Tails

  • TESTED
CDThough Tails was her debut album, Loeb had already hit the stratosphere of the pop charts a year earlier with "Stay," a monster hit from the soundtrack of the film Reality Bites. "Stay" is also included on Tails, but the other 12 tracks demonstrate Loeb had more than one good song in her, even if none of them found similar success on the singles chart. Loeb's knack for infectious, buoyant pop shines through on such instantly catchy tunes as "Snow Day," "Rose-Colored Time" and "Waiting for Wednesday"; quieter, darker numbers such as "Hurricane," "Alone" and "Lisa Listen" reveal a more reflective side; and "Taffy" shows she's occasionally willing to let loose and rock as well. --Peter Blackstock
